There is nothing more frustrating than making a fresh cleaning pass with a floor scrubber, turning around, and seeing wet streaks, water lines, and dirty trails left behind on the floor.
When a squeegee stops picking up water properly, it’s rarely a complex mechanical failure. In 90% of cases, the issue comes down to trapped debris or incorrect squeegee blade deflection.
Below is a quick, practical guide from the service team at Robey’s PowerKleen to get your squeegee drying floors bone-dry again.
2 Common Reasons Your Squeegee Is Leaving Streaks
[Trapped Debris on Squeegee Blade] ➔ Streaks & Water Lines
[Wrong Blade Deflection Angle] ➔ Poor Suction & Water Trails
1. Trapped Debris & Dirt Build-Up
When small bits of trash, hair, or dried chemical sludge get caught under the squeegee blade, it creates a tiny gap. That gap breaks the vacuum seal against the floor, allowing water to escape directly through the gap and leave a streak line behind your machine.
2. Incorrect Squeegee Deflection (Pitch & Angle)
If your squeegee blade is pressed down completely flat (“squashed”) against the floor, or if it isn’t bending enough, the rubber cannot flex properly to channel water toward the vacuum hose inlet.
Step-by-Step Fix: Clean & Set Proper Deflection
Follow these steps every time your scrubber starts leaving water trails:
Step 1: Lift & Wipe Down the Squeegee Assembly
- Raise the squeegee assembly completely off the ground.
- Take a clean shop rag and wipe down the full length of the front and rear squeegee blades.
- Inspect the channel: Check underneath the blade edge and around the center vacuum suction port to ensure no hair, plastic, or debris is caught in the squeegee lip or caster wheels.
Step 2: Lower the Squeegee & Check the Deflection Angle
- Drop the squeegee assembly back down onto a smooth, flat floor surface and engage the vacuum.
- Look closely at how the rubber blade flexes against the ground:
- Too Flat (Squashed): If the blade is bent fully flat under the frame, you have too much down pressure or wrong pitch. This causes accelerated blade wear and poor suction.
- Proper Deflection: The bottom lip of the squeegee blade should have a slight, uniform flare or bend along the entire edge.
Step 3: Verify a Uniform Seal
- Walk around to both ends of the squeegee assembly. Ensure the blade maintains the exact same slight bend from the far-left tip, through the center, all the way to the far-right tip.
- Once cleaned and angled correctly, make a short test run to confirm no streak lines remain.
